26/09/2006 - John Crane to Demonstrate its Industry Offering at Utility Live 2006
John Crane will be using the 2006 Utility Live exhibition to demonstrate the unique combination of specialist products and services that it offers to the utility industries market. The company has a well-deserved reputation for providing sealing and coupling solutions that are proven, practical and reliable. At the exhibition the company will be showing examples of its mechanical seals, seal support systems and power transmission couplings.

Sealing solutions
Cartridge seals for general duties will be represented by the 5600 Series. A modular construction with many interchangeable components allows this seal family to be applied throughout a plant, thus enabling spares inventory costs and downtime to be reduced while operating efficiency is increased.

Another cartridge seal on display will be the 4610 which is an excellent replacement for soft packings on general applications. Readily available off-the-shelf it provides a complete sealing solution for general industrial applications and meets key industry pump standards. It will be accompanied on the stand by the robust FFET that is designed for a variety of duties, especially those where mildly aggressive substances are being handled. Its compact design ensures that it will fit all ANSI and DIN stuffing boxes and the use of premium seal face materials ensures low heat generation and dry-running thermal stability.

For main boiler and other large scale, heavy-duty applications where reliability is essential, the well-proven John Crane 270F will also be featured on the stand. With an easily assembled cartridge construction the 270F has a computer-engineered face and seat configuration that provides high reliability and long operating life under all temperatures and pressures. Its cooling circuit is equally effective in reverse or forward rotation and a robust drive mechanism ensures high torque and long life.

John Crane’s 3710 and 37 FS split design cartridge seals will be on show. Ideal for many different applications the 3710 cartridge seal incorporates the very latest split seal technology plus a unique, easily installed design that adapts to both horizontal and vertical water pumps, mixers, and agitators. Type 37FS companion split seal reduces maintenance requirements on large, difficult to seal equipment and because it is externally mounted it is often used on applications with axial runout and vibration problems.

Intelligent control
Also featured on Stand No C17 will be John Crane’s SmartFlow intelligent seal water control system – a technology that won ‘User Application of the Year’ at the 2005 BPMA Awards. Able to adapt to the specific requirements of each individual seal and application, SmartFlow delivers water to the seal face only when it is actually required for cooling purposes. This generates reductions in seal water consumption of up to 97% compared to flow meter regulated control systems and also contributes towards significant savings in water costs and environmental impact

Versatile Metastream and Powerstream couplings
Prominent among the products on display will be a large-scale example of John Crane’s composite ZMC power transmission couplings. These long DBSE (distance between shaft ends) couplings are made from an exceptionally durable yet lightweight carbon steel compound that allows them to offer great resistance to the effects of their operating environment. This makes them especially well suited to cooling tower applications.

Couplings will also be represented by the company’s CPLR models. Available in spacer and non-spacer versions, these are suited to many general applications where torque needs to be transmitted between vertically mounted equipment such as motors, pumps or mixers. Featuring a segmented locating design that eliminates the shaft distortion normally associated with ‘clam shell’ coupling designs, the CPLR models are ideal for applications where the motor bearing supports the shaft.

Also in evidence will be John Crane’s Metastream TSR range of close-coupled membrane couplings. Designed as an effective, reliable solution where coupled machinery has a short DBSE the TSR units allow membrane replacement without the need to move either of the connected machines. They provide a true ‘fit and forget’ solution, zero maintenance requirements, outstanding ease of assembly and low imposed loads.

Completing the couplings line up from John Crane will be the company’s Powerstream A series elastomeric units, which although relatively new to Europe have a proven track record in other markets. They combine an easily installed wrap-around construction with the reliability of high performance polymers, an excellent power-to-weight ratio and high misalignment capacity. Available in close coupled, half and full spacer drop-out versions they can meet a wide variety of shaft configurations.

Containing contaminants
Completing John Crane’s product line up will be examples of its ProTech bearing isolators. These feature a two-piece design that completely contains lubricant within the bearing and also prevents any contamination entering from the outside. Manufactured from engineered PTFE composites (with metallic design options for higher speeds) they offer significantly increased bearing life and the ability to cope with high initial axial movement.
