£7.4M Oxycoal 2 project given go-ahead

Doosan Babcock Energy announced the start of a significant new project - Oxycoal 2 - to demonstrate Oxyfuel technology for carbon capture on coal-fired power plants. The project is a key stage in a programme to implement the new technology and puts the UK in front of its competitors in the race to develop this approach to carbon dioxide capture.
The £7.4M project is being supported by the Department for Business Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) under its Hydrogen Fuel Cells and Carbon Abatement Technologies (HFCCAT) Demonstration Programme and by a group of industrial sponsors and university partners comprising Scottish and Southern Energy (Prime Sponsor), E.ON UK PLC, Drax Power Limited, ScottishPower, EDF Energy, Dong Energy Generation, Air Products Plc (Sponsors), and Imperial College and University of Nottingham (University Partners).
Doosan Babcock will modify its unique Multi Fuel Burner Test Rig at Renfrew to accommodate Oxyfuel firing on pulverised coal with recycled flue gas and demonstrate the operation of a full scale 40 MW burner for use in coal-fired boilers, suitable both for new power plants being built around the world and for retrofit applications.

Research and technology development projects such as the Oxyfuel demonstration, are an integral part of our strategy to promote the use of cleaner fossil fuels across the globe in order to tackle climate change."

The project complements Doosan Babcock’s and its partners’ extensive R&D activities on carbon dioxide capture for pulverised coal-fired plants, including:
- Project 407: a study of how carbon capture can be retrofitted to modern coal-fired power plant, including advanced supercritical boiler/turbine retrofits (complete);
- Project 366: CO2 capture options for new build coal-fired power plant (complete);
- Project: Oxycoal 1 - underpinning technology.
Carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) requires the separation of carbon dioxide from the main component in the flue gas - normally nitrogen. In Oxyfuel firing the separation is achieved by separating air into its two primary components, oxygen and nitrogen, and firing the coal in the oxygen - which is diluted as necessary by recycled flue gas, predominantly carbon dioxide.
The upgrade of the burner test facility is expected to be complete early in 2009, with the first Oxyfuel combustion demonstration by the end of March that year.
