Industrial Video & Control IP cameras and camera management software integrated into leak detection system at the largest hydroelectric dam in South America. Newton, MA – May 29, 2009 – Industrial Video & Control Co. (IVC), a leading provider of etworked-based video surveillance systems, announced today that ABB has implemented IVC cameras and camera management software in the Guri Dam protection system. The second largest dam in the world, the Guri hydroelectric plant provides most of Venezuela’s hydroelectric power.
ABB, one the world’s leading engineering firms, was contracted by C.V.G. Electrificacion del Caroni C.A. (EDELCA) to modernize the control, protection, and instrumentation systems for the Guri Hydroelectric Plant located in Venezuela’s Nekuima Canyon. Part of the project involves the installation of a leak detection system that includes an extensive network of video surveillance cameras. “ABB wanted an IP-based solution that could easily interface to the plant’s fiber backbone,” states Rafael Bastidas, IVC system engineer. “It was also crucial that the camera management software have the capability to handle alarms from the leak detection system specified by ABB. IVC was able to adapt our Alarm Server software to listen for alarms from these leak detection devices.” IVC is a manufacturer of IP-based cameras and developer of advanced software for managing networks of video systems. “We have extensive experience with large control systems such as the Guri Dam,” says Norman Fast, president of IVC. “One of our company’s key strength’s is our ability to work with firms like ABB to develop a video surveillance or monitoring system that works seamlessly with other control systems and meets the customer’s exacting requirements.”
IVC cameras used in the Guri project include pan-tilt-zoom and zoom-only cameras. Under control of IVC software, these cameras automatically move to preset positions in response to alarms from the dam’s leak detection system. IVC manufactures cameras that are suitable for harsh weather and environmental conditions; some of their cameras have been certified for use in inherently dangerous environments. IVC camera systems combine their camera products and state-of-the-art management software. Their Relay Server and View Station software packages enable remote viewing and control of video as well as management of all aspects of surveillance or monitoring systems. IVC software also facilitates integration of video into 3rd party applications.
