Treating pharmaceutical effluent from Pilot-scale MBBR to large-scale MBBR plant

24 September 2010

Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies to deliver the new waste water plant for a giant pharmaceutical company in Eastern Europe.

Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies (VWS), global leader in water treatment, is a design & build company and a specialized provider of first-class turn key solutions (process water and waste water) to meet the needs of their pharmaceutical, biotech and healthcare clients.

Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies will design and commission a biological waste water treatment plant to treat all effluents of an existing specialized tablets & capsules pharmaceutical manufacturing site to meet the local stringent water discharge regulation. The core treatment is an AnoxKaldnes™ MBBR biological treatment.

The client, one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world has over 80 manufacturing sites, has awarded Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies a contract to supply, to build and to start-up a biological waste water plant for its pharmaceutical manufacturing facility.

AnoxKaldnes™ MBBR solution is a space saving moving bed biofilm reactor that operates continuously using specific plastic media to grow biofilm and provides effective biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) removal capability as well as ammonia and nitrogen removal. The MBBR plant is coupled, downstream, with a Dissolved Air Flotation unit (DAF) designed to clarify water and to remove the high Total Suspended Solids (TSS) content.

The plant’s sludge volume will be reduced by a sludge dewatering unit that will concentrate the biomass up to 20% dry solids.

Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies has offered the client its full-scale expertise with a pilot testing period of 3 months which has enabled VWS to define precisely the whole effluent process treatment that will meet, and finally exceed, the discharge regulation. The pilot unit installed on site is fully containerized with all equipment required to carry out a test remotely from Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies. It has helped the project to move forward much faster than usual. Only a site test was able to treat the exact complex effluent as it came from a variety of manufacturing processes. The flow and load variations were also only possible to get right on site and quite difficult to duplicate on a lab test.

AnoxKaldnes, a Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies subsidiary, has proven its successful industrial expertise in MBBR technology with more than 500 references worldwide in pharmaceutical, electronics, chemicals, food and beverage markets.

When Veolia Water Solutions & Technologies was chosen as the preferred supplier of the new industrial waste water treatment plant, the client made the choice of a turn key solution with guarantee of result comprising VWS proprietary wastewater products, space saving treatment and easy to upgrade.
