New Labscale reactor allows accurate testing and scale up
10 May 2011
The LabPlate is the latest addition to Alfa Laval’s ART range of plate reactors. It allows chemists to trial new products and solutions in the laboratory, confident that they can be accurately scaled up to full production.
The LabPlate offers flow capacities of 2-40 ml/min, which is ideal for experimentation and development. It enables chemists to establish a useful understanding of the flow chemistry involved and what would be necessary to scale up to production levels, without the consumption of masses of expensive raw materials.
How it works
The ART LabPlate combines the properties of a tube reactor with those of a plate heat exchanger. It contains two flow-directing reactor plates, controlled by heat transfer plates, contained within end pressure plates to create a compact reactor unit. Ports along the reaction channel provide access to the reaction mixture for measurement, sampling and reactant addition. The plate reactor can be dismantled and reassembled quickly, facilitating cleaning and its mechanical design copes well with reactions at elevated temperatures and pressures.
ART LabPlate offers several distinct advantages. The high heat transfer efficiency of a plate heat exchanger is combined with efficient mixing to provide reliable reaction control in a single unit. This not only allows users to improve existing processes and products but, because LabPlate is specifically designed to provide accurate scaling up to production levels, ensures that the product and process is fully developed before commercial production is begun. This simplification of the transfer of technology from laboratory to engineering will save time and money.
