CONTROL TECHNIQUES SPONSORS UK ENGINEERING UNDERGRADUATES

28 December 2011

Control Techniques in Newtown, Powys, Wales, has recently sponsored three students through Electrical Engineering degrees. All three students have now taken up permanent positions at Control Techniques. The students: Iain Riddell, Daniel Galert and Mark Towers, were sponsored via the E3 Academy.

E3 Students receive a scholarship of £2,500 a year during each year of their degree course, and are guaranteed an eight week summer vacation work placement where they earn another £2,500. The sponsorship is provided by a number of UK-based companies such as Control Techniques.

Control Techniques is a leading manufacturer of motor control and power conversion technology for commercial and industrial applications, and has been sponsoring students through university degrees for over 20 years. In 2006 it was a founder member of the E3 Academy, a collaborative scheme bringing together industrialists and leading UK universities. The aim of the Academy is to encourage more students to take up careers in electrical engineering.

Daniel Galert and Mark Towers are now working at Control Techniques’ multi-million pound Engineering and Design (E&D) Centre, ‘The Gro’, in Newtown. Control Techniques’ continued success is dependent on heavy investment in research and development and the Gro is one of several E&D centres worldwide. At the Gro, a large team of research engineers is dedicated to the development of new and existing products.

Iain Riddell is based at the UK manufacturing site, also in Newtown.

Commenting on the E3 Academy scheme, Iain Riddell said: “Being part of an internationally renowned manufacturing company has given me a fascinating insight into a lot of aspects of industry, whilst the summer placements have provided me with invaluable work experience.”

Daniel Galert added: “Receiving support from Control Techniques really helped me express my ideas and improved my understanding throughout my degree. I have now joined the company full-time, and look forward to an exciting career.”

Mark Towers said: “The E3 Academy provides an exciting opportunity to enhance the university experience for students. I would highly recommend any A-level student interested in studying electrical engineering to apply for the E3 Academy. The time I spent working at Control Techniques in the summer not only assisted in my university work, but also made for an easy transition into working full time for the company.”

Mark Bulanda, President of Control Techniques, said: “With such a shortage of engineering skills in the UK at the moment, Control Techniques is really pleased to be able to sponsor engineering students via the E3 Academy. Students at the Academy not only learn a fantastic set of skills at university, but also gain invaluable work experience with their sponsoring company.”
