John Kay of Rockwell Automation Named IEEE Fellow
16 July 2012
Rockwell Automation senior product specialist for the Medium Voltage Technologies business receives prestigious honor, joins elite IEEE group
13th July 2012 - John Kay, senior product specialist for Rockwell Automation, Medium Voltage Business, Cambridge, Ontario, has been named an IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Fellow. He is being recognised for his contributions to arc-resistant medium-voltage control and protection technologies – improving safety for people and equipment.
The IEEE grade of fellow is conferred by the IEEE Board of Directors upon a person with an outstanding record of accomplishments in any of the IEEE fields of interest. IEEE Fellow is the highest grade of membership and is recognised by the technical community as a prestigious honor and an important career achievement.
Kay has devoted himself to the advancement of industry safety standards over the course of his career. “Revised requirements surrounding standards for safe work practices continue to drive our need to develop market leading products to help customers comply with safety requirements,” Kay said. “Our arc- resistant control equipment designs provide that additional level of protection, channeling dangerous arc energies away from people.”
Kay joined Rockwell Automation in 1988 and has worked in many areas of the Medium Voltage Business. Currently, he focuses on new technologies and product inceptions, including electronic, electrical and mechanical designs. He has made significant contributions to arc-resistant control equipment designs and industry standards, providing much-needed protection for machine builders and end users.
Kay received his degree in electrical/electronic engineering technology from Conestoga College, Kitchener, Ontario. He has authored a variety of award-winning technical papers, articles and manuals related to medium-voltage electrical control and protection systems, arc-resistant equipment and infrared technologies. Many of Kay’s papers have been published in the IEEE Industry Application Society (IAS) Transactions and the IEEE IAS magazine. He serves on the IEEE Pulp and Paper Industry Committee executive board and is a member of the IEEE Standards Committee, where he influences product design and application standards.
