Major capital investment and new jobs as James Walker Moorflex gears for major growth

10 June 2014

UK specialist metal machining company James Walker Moorflex has committed its largest ever investment in a single item of plant and created three new skilled jobs with the installation of a new high-precision 5-axis machining centre from DMG Mori at the company’s Bingley production site.

The company manufactures high-precision components in a range of exotic metals for critical applications in the oil, gas and nuclear industries, with more than 75% of its output going for export to a wide range of blue-chip projects and customers round the globe.

"This represents the largest investment we have ever made in a single item of plant. This investment illustrates our commitment to meeting the most demanding of customer requirements by investing in the latest manufacturing technology and, equally important, the experienced personnel to operate such plant,” says James Walker Moorflex's manufacturing manager Andrew Meredith.

“We have an ambitious growth target of 25% per annum and this investment in both manufacturing technology and people, will enable us to stay ahead of the demands of our customers in the high specification oil, gas and nuclear industries.

The new machining centre is fully commissioned and running on a three shift operation. Its high speed capability for milling and turning allows Moorflex to carry out roughing and finishing operations on a component up to 830mm in diameter and 500mm in length with a single setup, whilst the rigidity of the monoBLOCK® design means this machine can handle the toughest of materials including Incoloy 825, Inconel 600, 625 and 718 high nickel alloys, which are essential for the components we manufacture.”

The 5-axis machining centre is the latest in a string of investments for the Yorkshire-based company, which have also included advanced, high precision EDM (electrical discharge machining) and 3-dimensional CMM (coordinate measuring machines, over the last 12 months).
