ABB’s Automatic Transfer Switches for smooth transition of power

7 October 2015

leader in power and automation reaches out to market with switches for critical power applications

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has launched its latest generation Automatic Transfer Switches (ATSs). The switches are for critical power applications that require a constant and reliable power supply. ATSs ensure the safe, reliable, secure and user-friendly transfer of loads from the primary network to a standby generator or a second power supply.

Used widely in critical power applications such as telecommunications, healthcare, utilities, commercial buildings and data centres as well as buildings that are fitted with fire safety systems, the range includes manual and automatic switches, controllers and accessories for motors, resistive loads, mixed loads and off load applications.

ABB is now reaching out to the market with its latest generation ATSs in enclosures, which are assembled and tested in the UK for applications rated from 40 to 1600 A. The IP65 enclosure protects against dust and water ingress and its design allows significant space for cabling so that installers will find it easy to terminate oversized cables.

Basic ATSs monitor the loss of supply and switch to and from backup power. Higher levels of control include timer functions, dead pan and back switching, generator start / stop switching, energy metering and load shedding capabilities, as well as communication with a Building Management System (BMS).
“Critical applications require a constant and reliable power supply to keep fundamental services running and prevent serious consequences due to interruption or absence from the electrical grid. This need is even more pronounced in everyday life because of the increasing demand placed on the grid. That’s why ABB wants to let the market know about our range of enclosed change-over and auto transfer switches.” said Len McGanity, Product Manager for ABB Breakers and Switches in the UK.
