QM Systems cuts costs with EPLAN

QM Systems Ltd, an innovative, multi-disciplined bespoke automation company, is achieving big savings in cost and time as a result of recently adopting the EPLAN Electric P8 computer aided engineering (CAE) software package from EPLAN, which the company uses in conjunction with the EPLAN Fluid add-on module and the EPLAN Data Portal.

As QM Systems manages the entire execution of projects from design to completion, its engineering team required a sustainable CAE system that would increase productivity, while ensuring that designs accurately meet clients’ specifications. To help the company achieve this goal, EPLAN’s professional services consultants initially visited QM Systems to find out what level of CAE software was needed.

After carefully considering the consultants’ proposals, QM Systems took the decision to implement EPLAN Electric P8, which offers an exceptionally wide range of options for planning, documenting and managing automation projects, and the EPLAN Fluid module, which adds support for the design of hydraulic and pneumatic systems. QM Systems also decided to use the EPLAN Data Portal to source accurate, detailed and up-to-date information about components that would be used in its projects.

The results are impressive. The EPLAN software has halved the time QM Systems spends on completing designs. Equally impressive, the quality and clarity of the documentation produced, and the virtual elimination of errors means that the company’s manufacturing team is also reaping big benefits.

“What we like best about EPLAN Electric P8 is the way it’s structured,” said Leigh Hollamby, Operations Director at QM Systems, “as this makes it very easy to use. The way it produces drawings is very intuitive and it integrates seamlessly with every aspect of our operations. As a result, we’re accelerating not only our electrical design work but also our purchasing and manufacturing processes. The EPLAN software has integrated libraries of design templates that save us so much time and, following EPLAN’s lead, we are now also creating our own bespoke libraries, which will further reduce design time.”

“Another big benefit we’ve found is the greatly reduced need for checking and vetting designs,” continued Leigh Hollamby. “The software ensures consistency of approach and virtual eliminates the risk of human error, so we can rely on the drawings and documentation it produces without having to spend a lot of time reviewing them.”

As well as using EPLAN Electric P8, QM Systems has full access to the EPLAN Data Portal. This is a collaborative web-based platform where major manufacturers of electrical, mechanical, fluidic and pneumatic components provide detailed information about their products. The engineers at QM Systems can download this data directly into their designs, which not only saves time, but also greatly reduces the possibility of error.
