The Relec Big Desert Challenge

8 February 2019

In just four weeks’ time, one brave man from Dorset will set foot in the Sahara to undertake the Big Relec Desert Challenge. Peter Lappin is Managing Director of Relec Electronics, a market leading company in the power and display field. He is setting foot far outside his comfort zone to take up the challenge of trekking across 100 kilometres of searing hot desert in only five days.

How can anyone train for something as unknown as walking across the Sahara? Peter has been walking every weekend since October, gradually building up the miles and hill ascents around the unforgiving but stunning Dorset countryside. Going from zero exercise to hundreds of walking miles did start to take its toll on Peter’s hips but thanks to input from physiotherapist Tim Cruse-Drew (he who got Eddie Izzard round 27 marathons in 27 days), he started strengthening his core. That, together with high intensity cycling training, has meant a positive improvement in Peter’s performance.

With the Saharan trek now within touching distance, is Peter having any regrets? Speaking to BBC Radio Solent’s Julian Clegg on his breakfast show on 22 January, Peter shared his worries and also spoke about the reason he’s undertaking this monumental effort. “No regrets,” he says, “but I am concerned that I won’t be able to acclimatise to the day time heat and conditions, or equally the plummeting night time temperatures when we’ll all be sleeping outdoors in tents.”

The Big Relec Desert Challenge is all in the name of The Brain Tumour Charity. Of the £500M funding given to cancer research, only 2% goes towards brain cancer – and 30 adults and children are diagnosed every day. The Brain Tumour Charity allocates 80% of all funds raised to finding cures, research, raising awareness with GPs through early testing and therefore earlier detection of tumours, and support for tumour sufferers. Peter has pledged to raise £6000 and Relec will match every pound he raises through his JustGiving page.
