Turck Banner – Taking the pressure off sensor selection

When it comes to process monitoring the foot soldiers of any installation are the pressure and flow sensors. Sensor and automation specialists Turck Banner recognise the diverse needs of industry in this respect and are able to offer a range of pressure and flow sensors that can withstand even the harshest environments.
Pressure sensors capture relative or absolute pressures in liquids and gases and product ranges are available for hydraulic and pneumatic applications utilising the very latest ceramic and piezo-resistive measuring technology.
With measuring ranges from 1–600 bar at 0.5 percent accuracy of the full scale, Turck Banner pressure sensors are ideal for a wide variety of process applications. Versions are available for hazardous area locations and with food industry specified housings. The PT series includes pressure sensors with analogue output for media temperatures up to 125 °C whilst the PS series offers pressure sensors with display, output variants (switching and analogue output) and communication via IO-Link.
In addition the recent Hannover Fair saw the launch of the new PS+ range of pressure sensors with capacitive touch-pads. These robust sensors can be easily installed and commissioned, even in overhead positions thanks to 340° rotation of the sensor head. Upon initial connection the sensor automatically determines whether the controller or the bus module requires a PNP or NPN, current or voltage signal. A compatibility mode is also provided for the integration in IO-Link systems. A hermetically sealed keypad ensures greater resistance to dirt and liquids, meeting the requirements of ISO protection to IP6K7K, IP6K7 and IP6K9K.
The company also offers wireless pressure sensors which make it easy to monitor critical pressure levels on systems and equipment in remote locations, without the expense and hassle of installing or expanding the wiring infrastructure.
All-in-One Pressure sensors combine a media isolated pressure sensor with reliable, field-proven, Sure Cross wireless architecture in one package. These battery-powered devices can be used to wirelessly transmit pressure levels to a wireless controller/gateway for remote monitoring of critical systems.
Models are available with either the sensor directly attached to the wireless head or with a 1 metre cable between the head and the sensor.
Flow monitoring is a procedure that demands a reliable and reproducible surveillance of limit values and flow patterns. Flow sensors detect critical deviations of the flow rate of liquid and gaseous media. Typical areas of application are the monitoring of cooling circuits in welding applications for example, protection against dry running of pumps, as well as the flow monitoring in air ducts and air conditioning equipment. The calorimetric principle also facilitates temperature monitoring of the media temperature.
Flow rate measurement
In addition to reproducibility, flow-rate measurement demands a defined degree of accuracy. The flow meters continuously and accurately measure a defined volume of fluid per unit of time and are suitable for applications where qualitatively consistent process results and a steady supply of fluids are essential. With typical measuring tolerances of less than 2% of full scale, Turck Banner offer flow meters with calorimetric, magnetic-inductive and vortex measurement principle for various areas of application.
Valve monitoring is another key element in process applications and hereto Turck Banner can provide a comprehensive range of solutions. The Ri-DSU35 is the first contactless inductive angle sensor that also has ATEX and IEC-Ex approval for use in zones 1 and 21. The Ri-DSU35 offers considerable benefits for position measurement of valves and stop valves in Ex areas. It can detect valve positions in a full 360° range that facilitates monitoring of three-way valves. As the sensor comes in the same housing as the conventional dual sensor it is compatible with the extensive range of Turck accessories.
The contactless measuring principle of the Ri-DSU35 operates absolutely wear-free, ensuring a long service life and constant precision. Through the 360° detection of the valve position, the sensor also enables predictive maintenance. The user can thus detect a worn seal as soon as the sensor outputs a value that deviates from the originally expected flap end position.
Turck Banner also offers a wear-free alternative to mechanical micro-switches, widely used in valve monitoring. The BI2-Q10S range of inductive proximity sensors include standard and Ex versions and can be retro-fitted to most conventional monitoring boxes.
