Altra demonstrates solutions capability across its brands for stage and theatre applications

5 June 2019

Altra Industrial Motion is using this year’s Stage Set Scenery exhibition as an opportunity to highlight the synergy and solutions capability across its different brands for creating high performance, high reliability systems for stage and theatre applications where there can be no compromise on safety.

On booth 218, hall 21, Altra will be reinforcing the capabilities of the industry standard Stromag Series 51 geared cam limit switches, and introducing a new range of brakes from Warner Electric that set new standards in performance, reliability, flexibility and low noise levels.

With braking torques from 5Nm to 4,600Nm, Warner Electric’s new Fenix family of brakes has been designed to provide the most reliable dampening system on the market. Boasting a low operating noise of better than 45dB(A), the range comprises three models: Fenix 08, with a single magnet and a single friction disc; the Fenix 10, with a single magnet and two friction discs, offering double the torque in the same package size; and the Fenix 09, featuring two magnets and two friction discs to provide full redundancy.

The brakes use a new friction material specially developed by Warner Electric engineers for stage winch applications, combining increased braking torque with freedom from the problems of condensation experienced in other brake designs. They also incorporate Warner Electric’s innovative WES sensor technology as standard, overcoming the inherent limitations of both micro-switches and inductive proximity sensors for monitoring armature position.

Other standard features include a dust cover and connections for an encoder, with options for hand release. Furthermore, the brakes are available in either high torque or high speed configurations. All of this enables each brake to be tailored to the precise requirements of individual applications.

Developed from Warner Electric’s established range of elevator brakes, the Fenix range now brings new levels of performance to stage and theatre applications, where Altra is looking to highlight the synergies across its brands, and hence its solutions capability. This enables users to standardise on a single supplier rather than having to source individual components from separate suppliers and run the risk of challenges of integration.

Altra’s reputation for quality within the stage and theatre sector is typified by the industry standard Stromag Series 51 geared cam limit switches. These reliably switch off sequences of motion and restrict machines with independently and precisely adjustable cam discs. Proven in theatres around the world, they are certified to DGUV V17.

With a host of products from these and other Altra Industrial Motion divisions on the display, the stand at Stage Set Scenery will also feature a demonstration to highlight the benefits of these innovative products in a typical stage winch application, backed up by 3D animations.
