WEG wins contracts for Oman refinery project

1 July 2020

Manufacturer of rotating electrical machines and drives, WEG has gone on to secure the contract of phase two of the Duqm refinery project and a new phase of Ras Markaz Crude Oil Park in Oman, after winning phase one of the Duqm project in 2018. WEG will supply a range of energy efficient hazardous area motors and drives, to equip the 900 hectare oil facility with power to its pumps, compressors and blowers. This is one of WEG’s largest project wins in the Middle East.

The Duqm refinery will have the potential capacity to process around 230,000 barrels of crude oil every day, easing the transportation of diesel, jet fuel, naphtha and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) in and out of the region. Its construction is a significant undertaking, divided into three phases that are due to complete in 2020.

“WEG worked closely with the customers to ensure that our motors and drives met their requirements,” said Raphael Torrano, Managing Director of WEG Middle East. “The specification required complicated design work by WEG’s engineering team, as it was not possible to standardise a single design for this project. We came up with a creative and flexible offer, which was a big factor in us winning the additional contracts.”

Bespoke modifications to the design included adding specialist hardware in the variable speed drive (VSD) panels, smart relays and several circuit interlocks. The Duqm plant also needed motors with a lower inrush current, which made WEG’s synchronous motors an obvious choice.

The project will follow another phase of the construction of Ras Markaz Crude Oil Park, a large crude storage facility. WEG will supply four W22XdT tube cooled three-phase motors with a capacity of 900 kilowatts (kW) and 11,000 volts (V). These motors and drives will be made by WEG Portugal and will be one of the largest flameproof motors supplied in the world and will be installed alongside four of the branch’s largest drive.

WEG regards the Duqm refinery as a prestige project that also gained the manufacturers a place on the list of approved vendors compiled by the oil and gas giant, BP. Thanks to the ongoing success of this project, WEG anticipates more projects like this in the Middle East. In fact, the manufacturer has recently established a repair and service network in the region to provide aftersales support for WEG’s motors and other equipment.
