Manufacturers see fine line between Brexit threats and opportunities

·    UK manufacturers most optimistic about global economic outlook since 2014
·    40% of manufacturers are planning for growth in their industry this year compared with 19% predicting deterioration
·    Sales growth expected in the domestic market (62%), non-EU markets (51%) and from EU customers (47%)
·    But a growing balance of companies sees more risks that opportunities in 2018 – 26%, up from 23% in 2017
·    The most cited risks to growth are related to Brexit – rising costs and sterling volatility
·    An increase in US protectionism or sharp slowdown in China could threaten business growth
·    Non-Brexit risks are also present with cyber-attacks on the radar for 62% and concerns about capacity constraints (50%)
·    In response manufacturers expect to do more to improve productivity – process innovation and automation
·    And to mitigate risks – more cyber security, employee engagement and cashflow management
·    Investment outlook continues to look finely balanced in 2018, despite positive sentiment towards the UK as a location for manufacturing

Britain’s manufacturers enter 2018 optimistic that a growing global economy will sustain new orders and industry growth in the year ahead according to a major survey published today by EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation and the global insurer AIG.
