3M'S QUEST FOR THE TOTAL HEARING SOLUTION

3M, the diversified technology company, has launched an innovative sound level meter as part of its Total Hearing Solution for noise in the workplace.

The 3M Sound Detector SD-200 is a compact and lightweight entry-level sound meter that has been introduced within the 3M Quest detection range. Designed to provide accurate measurement of workplace noise levels through an advanced integrating feature that computes the average sound pressure level, it is ideal for industrial and task noise sampling.

Sue Poole of 3M's Occupational Health & Environmental Safety Division explained: "Noise levels can vary significantly in the workplace, especially in manufacturing facilities or machine shops. The 3M Sound Detector SD-200 is an easy-to-use sound measuring device that combats this problem by providing an average sound level reading.

"From taking a measurement, it is easy to select the appropriate hearing protection as the screen of the 3M Sound Detector SD-200 will display green, yellow or red LEDs that correspond to the 3M Optime Alert System, which categorises products into attenuation guidelines."

The 3M Sound Detector SD-200 is one of the flagship products within the 3M Quest range and is part of 3M's Total Hearing Solution, which caters for all workplace hearing protection needs. Customers can use the 3M Quest range to identify noise hazards in the workplace and select suitable products using the 3M online product selector tool. The workforce can be trained using 3M tools and services such as DVDs, CDs and the 3M Hearing Conservation Programme. An EARFit validation system is also available that measures the effectiveness of the fitting of a given product within a selected 3M earplug range.

The range of Quest products was added to 3M's portfolio of hearing protection solutions in 2008 as part of the acquisition of global manufacturer of measurement devices, Quest Technologies. A range of measurement devices feature in the range, from environmental sound level meters and personal dosimeters to heat stress, air quality and vibration monitors. QuestSuite Professional II Software is also available as part of the 3M Quest range, which is a system for recording and analysing data for most of the 3M Detection instruments.

Sue added: "The introduction of the Quest range was instrumental in creating our Total Hearing Solution. It helps the end user make informed decisions in hearing protection, which can also improve workforce compliance and the overall success of a hearing conservation strategy."
