ABB launches new generation RTU560 substation remote terminal unit

New IEC 61850-compatible RTU560 primary remote terminal unit provides a flexible, modular high-performance solution for substation telemetry projectsFirst Friday, London, March 4, 2011 - ABB's new generation RTU560 primary remote terminal unit (RTU) has been developed to provide a flexible, modular high-performance solution that can be readily configured to suit specific customer requirements, making it ideal for transmission and distribution substation upgrade and retrofit projects.
The primary RTU plays a vital role in the monitoring and control of substations by providing a telemetry link between the local equipment, such as relays and switchgear, and the network control centre (NCC). A key advantage of the RTU560 is that it is based on an open protocol, so it can readily be adapted to suit different communications protocols and interfaces as the needs of the substation operator change. Furthermore, the RTU560 is essentially 'future-proof' as it has the built in capability to operate with the advancing global IEC 61850 standard for communication in substations that is bringing open, interoperable systems and flexible architectures to the substation automation domain.
RTU frame agreement for DNO
In a four-year frame agreement, ABB will supply hundreds of the RTU560 units to one of the UK's major distribution network operators (DNOs) for substation upgrading projects.
The deal is ABB's first RTU frame agreement with a UK DNO. Over the next four years, the DNO is planning to upgrade the RTUs at many of its 132 kV, 33 kV and 11 kV distribution substations to migrate from the existing outdated and time-expired units.
Andy Osiecki, ABB's Substation Automation Manager said, "This frame agreement is an important breakthrough for the RTU560 in the UK utilities market.
