ABB WINS PRESTIGIOUS BUSINESS AWARD

ABB Ltd, a leader in power and automation technologies, has joined an elite group of top business performers who are regional winners in the EEF Future Manufacturing Awards 2012.

The Warrington-based company was presented with the EEF North West Region Green and Growth Award by sponsor ENER-G.

ABB Ltd used technical ingenuity to persuade customers to adopt energy saving measures for motor-driven processes, developing an energy appraisal and savings illustration app that could help them reduce their carbon footprint and cut electricity bills.

The company's Energy Efficiency Plan was developed to overcome market reluctance to try variable-speed drives, which can reduce the energy used by motors by 20 percent on average. The energy appraisal determines the energy saving and CO2 emission reduction potential of a site in just half a day, by selecting key applications that can benefit from the use of variable-speed drives and high efficiency electric motors.

Through its nationwide team of assessment engineers, ABB is now selling more drives to more industries as a result of its energy appraisals, reflected in a 43 percent increase in business during the period 2011-2012. They are now the UK's No.1 supplier.

The annual business awards are hosted by EEF, the UK manufacturers' organisation, and recognise excellence in enterprise, innovation, environmental performance and skills development among UK manufacturers.

David Ost, EEF North West Regional Director, said: "Manufacturing is vital to economic recovery and companies like ABB Ltd are setting the benchmark for success. They are leading the way by developing technologies which address the green agenda and provide substantial business results to customers. Congratulations to their entire team on this impressive success."

Cedric Rodrigues of ENER-G, awards sponsor and energy services partner to the EEF, said: "We applaud the remarkable achievements of ABB and the shining example of green business excellence they are setting. Judging by the high standard of entries this year, the future of sustainable manufacturing is in safe hands."

The judging panel, led by Cranfield University and the Institute for Manufacturing at the University of Cambridge, praised ABB Ltd's achievements, stating: "With the potential to massively reduce customers' carbon footprint in conjunction with a well-developed sales model, theirs as an exemplar green and growth story."

ABB Ltd will go forward to compete against other regional winners from across the UK in EEF's National Awards final on 31 January 2012 in London.
