This application uses a microwave barrier detection system to ensure the correct positioning of boats in locks before the filling and emptying of the chamber.

Application:
A canal, river, dock or harbour lock, whatever the size, has the same basic principle. It is a fixed, gated chamber which enables the water inside to be equalised to obtain the same level as either side. This allows boats to cross level differences of up to 30m. Nowadays, to optimise safety during entrance and exit of the boats, the operation of the locks is automated. To proceed with the filling or emptying of the 'chamber', it is vital that the boat is in the correct position to ensure the entrance gate can be closed.

Solution:
The use of a microwave barrier detection system is a safe and effective solution. This non-contact detection system ensures that gates only close when the boat is in position. As the boat enters the chamber it cuts the microwave transmission and, as soon as the signal is restored at both ends, it is clear for the gate to close. To allow for water level variations and boat draught differences, two pairs of barriers are used at different heights. To avoid possible interference, the emitters and receivers of each barrier are mounted inverted. A very low output power means it is safe to use with people in the area.

Technology:
The emitter transmits a focused microwave signal via a horn antenna to the receiver unit on the opposite side. If there is medium between the transmitter and receiver, the signal is damped. This change is detected by the electronics in the receiver unit and converted into a switching command.
