APPRENTICES HONOURED AT INAUGURAL PRIZEGIVING

An award recognising excellence in engineering apprentices, and named in honour of a lifelong advocate of apprenticeships and training, has been presented in Fradley.Norgren, a world leader in pneumatic motion and fluid control technologies, restarted its apprenticeship programme in 2011 under the guidance of Alan Topping, a now-retired Engineering Manager who worked at the company for more than 30 years. The presentation of the Topping Trophy coincides with the graduation of the first cohort of four apprentices from the 2011 intake, all of whom have secured full time roles with Norgren.
At the ceremony, the Topping Trophy was presented to first-year apprentice Liam Dixon of Lichfield after he received top scores from production managers, team leaders and tutors from In-Comm Training & Business Services, who partnered with Norgren to deliver the apprenticeships. Apprentices from all three years of the scheme were eligible, and were marked on a range of criteria from attitude to learning and attainment, to their approach to teamwork. Alan Topping presented the trophy, and the ceremony was also attended by engineers who have guided the trainees through their apprenticeships as well as Peter Matton, European President of Norgren.
Commenting on the prizegiving, Steve Cadman, Engineering Manager explained: "Scoring highly across all criteria, Liam is a worthy inaugural winner of the Topping Trophy. His diligence, dedication to learning and aptitude for engineering were noted by all the team leaders who mentor our apprentices and, as our apprenticeship scheme is geared towards providing employment for all those who complete it, he has a very promising future with Norgren."
Liam is also on a winning streak after earlier picking up the Apprentice of the Year award from training provider In-Comm.
Alan Topping, who made the presentation to Liam, commented: "The importance of apprenticeships is certainly growing as we seek to address a nationwide skills shortage in the engineering sector. Liam joined the scheme straight from school and has already shown a natural ability for engineering which has led to him winning this award. Reinstating apprenticeships has proved to be very successful for Norgren and I wish the graduating trainees, as well as those part-way through their scheme, all the best with their future careers."
