APPRENTICESHIP 'RISK' PAYS OFF FOR NEW JCB EMPLOYEE

A former team leader in charge of almost 100 people is forging a great new career with JCB after stepping back into learning as an apprentice.Tom Clarke, 29, from Stafford is one of a record-breaking 79 apprentices who will next week be awarded their apprenticeship certificates - at the same time as getting coveted contracts of employment with the Staffordshire-based digger maker.
The group is the biggest in the history of JCB to graduate as Level 2 and 3 apprentices in a single year. They will receive their awards from JCB directors at a special graduation ceremony at JCB World Headquarters, Rocester as part of National Apprenticeships Week, on Monday March 4th.
Tom set his sights on a JCB apprenticeship after 10 years working his way through the ranks with Screwfix, becoming a team leader and trainer at their Stafford warehouse site.
He said: "I have always wanted to work for JCB and I got to a point in my career where I needed a new challenge. It was a risk because I have a family and a mortgage, and returning to a learning environment was a bit scary. However, I think being older and having worked for 10 years is a great advantage as I understand how to build relationships and work in a team, which are really important skills at work.
"The apprenticeship has been great; the work here is challenging but there are so many opportunities that I plan to keep an open mind for the future."
Tom, JCB's first Health and Safety Apprentice, is now employed as Health and Safety Co-ordinator in the company's Loadall business unit, at Rocester.
JCB Chief Executive Graeme Macdonald said: "New talent joining the business is fundamental to JCB's future growth and success; our business is growing rapidly and the apprentices are an important part of our plans for the long term.
"Over the past five years JCB has invested £30 million into its training programmes with more than 700 new recruits joining the business as apprentices or graduates. Their commitment to learning has been exemplary and their hard work has paid off with the award of full-time contracts."
