As GlobalData forecasts rapid growth in digital twins, Wireless Logic urges manufacturers to focus on resilience

A GlobalData report predicts the Industrial Internet market will more than double in value, reaching $553 billion by 2029.

Manufacturing is expected to lead that growth, with AI, digital twins and autonomous operations driving greater efficiency, resilience and agility. As companies such as Nvidia and Siemens push towards AI-driven factories, the report argues that digital twins will play a central role in helping organisations optimise assets, predict failures and improve performance through real-time data.

Paul Bullock, group chief product officer at Wireless logic, has made the following comments:

"Digital twins have huge potential, but they’re only as useful as the data behind them. A virtual model of a factory, asset or production line won’t help much if the information feeding it is delayed, incomplete or unreliable.

“For industrial businesses, that makes connectivity a strategic issue, not just an IT consideration. As more machines, sensors and remote assets come online, the digital twin will inevitably inherit the strengths and weaknesses of the environment beneath it. If that connectivity is fragmented, vulnerable or hard to manage, those risks don’t disappear. They’re carried straight into the decisions the business makes.

“This is where the digital twin conversation needs to mature. The focus can’t just be on visualisation, AI or predictive maintenance. Manufacturers need to ask how data will move securely and reliably across sites, assets and markets, how devices will stay connected as networks evolve, and how they’ll be provisioned, monitored and updated at scale.

“Digital twins can be powerful operational tools, but they’re not standalone systems. Their value depends on the resilience of the connected ecosystem behind them."
