AstraZeneca Awards Nine Siemens S5 to S7 Upgrades to ITS Ltd

Industrial Technology Systems Ltd (ITS Ltd) has won a project to upgrade nine Siemens S5 PLC Water Distribution Systems with the latest Siemens S7 equipment in the QAB and Formulation 1 plants at AstraZeneca's Macclesfield site. Located in the north west of England, the Macclesfield site is AstraZeneca's second largest manufacturing site and its European centre for packing. The site specialises in manufacturing, packing and distributing medicines to 130 global markets. AstraZeneca's Macclesfield site is dedicated to increasing the efficiency of its manufacturing processes and its recent decision to replace its Siemens S5 systems is an example of its commitment to improve reliability, efficiency, maintainability and longevity. The new Siemens S7 systems will offer a number of benefits to AstraZeneca including improvements in MTBF, MTTR, reliability and availability.

ITS Ltd has been working in partnership with AstraZeneca since the company started in 1991 and has completed over 400 projects at the Macclesfield site. With excellent knowledge of the company's site, systems, processes, standards and GxP validation requirements, ITS Ltd was the ideal partner for the Siemens PLC upgrade project. The majority of the Siemens S5 systems to be replaced at AstraZeneca's site are validated systems, critical to operations and therefore any actions taken as part of the upgrades will need to be documented and validated. Phil White, Projects Manager of ITS Ltd explains, "We recognise the importance of rigorous testing and detailed documentation to validate critical systems used in the pharmaceutical industry, to ensure that the systems do exactly what's required. Prior to winning the project, we performed a proof of concept for AstraZeneca, to verify the accuracy and efficiency of the upgrade approach, and demonstrate that the tight project timescales could be met."

ITS Ltd will also be responsible for producing the validation documentation for the upgraded systems and carrying out the associated qualification activities. Through its strong working relationship with AstraZeneca, ITS Ltd fully understands the company's validation needs and its engineers are highly capable of completing all the necessary activities to meet and exceed AstraZeneca's computer system qualification requirements.
