Brewing diversity mastered - Siemens supports planning of new Paulaner brewery

Traditional Munichbased brewery Paulaner opted to use the Siemens Industry Tecnomatix simulation tool in the planning of its latest brewery plant. The tool helps facilitate planning to balance capacity, flexibility and costs.Beverage output, seasonal fluctuations in demand, product innovations or changing packaging solutions - planning a new brewery plant means considering a whole range of different factors. This was the challenge faced by the traditional Bavarian brewery company Paulaner when it set out to develop the concept for a brand new plant on the outskirts of Munich.

In order to compare different scenarios and ensure that the chosen solution was the most cost-efficient and future-proof of all possible options, Paulaner decided to make use of simulation. Using the Tecnomatix portfolio from Siemens PLM Software as the basis, simulation service provider and Siemens Solution Partner iSILOG drew up a solution specifically tailored to the needs of the beverage industry.
This provides a realistic depiction of the production process to allow different strategies and scenarios to be tested. The software also allows the brewery's performance to be quickly measured using a range of key indicators such as heat requirement, energy consumption or loss of beer during the brewing process. The impact of demand or production outages can also be precisely analyzed.
As a result, the brewery was ultimately able to devise the best strategy for everything from cleaning processes, handovers and batch sizes to product planning and monitoring. A new sequencing strategy was also determined as a function of the product mix and quantity. This is important due to the difficulty of manually estimating system performance in complex systems such as brewery plants.
