Businesses invited to see why tractor manufacturer attracted the Prime Minister

AN invitation has been issued to businesses to visit a factory and see why it attracted the attention of the country's political leaders.

Case New Holland (CNH) is opening its doors for firms to see best practice in action next month and in September - just weeks after both the Prime Minister David Cameron and his deputy Nick Clegg visited the company's manufacturing plant in Basildon.

Companies are being invited to see for themselves how business improvement techniques and skills training - supported by Semta, the sector skills council for science, engineering and manufacturing - helped deliver savings of more than £1.2 million.

Colin Larkin, Plant Manager, said: "Having the Prime Minister and his deputy visit us was an honour.  It sent a great message to everyone that we have been noticed as doing the right kind of thing in UK manufacturing.

"Other organisations who have come to visit us have always taken away innovative ideas and best practice which they can put into their own workplace and we look forward to welcoming more into our plant."

Employing 1,000 people, the Basildon plant has made 1.8 million tractors in its 47-year history and won The Manufacturer's 2011 Award for World Class Manufacturing.

Lynn Tomkins, UK operations director at Semta, said: "CNH is committed to improving its competitiveness and is a leading force in this country's advanced manufacturing sector so it was gratifying to see this recognised by our leading politicians.

"The best practice events are a fantastic opportunity for firms to learn, network and discover the kind of support on offer to help them achieve similar results to CNH and I would urge them to take advantage of the chance to see such a superb operation as CNH in action."

Colin Larkin added: "Semta was one of the key providers in retraining our workforce, opening them to new ideas and change. They are valued partners of CNH."

CNH UK belongs to the top 15 export companies, exporting to approximately 120 countries, and producing a tractor every four minutes, which pushed the value of production to over £1.2billion last year.

During his visit, the Prime Minister described CNH as "a great example of a growing, successful company that showcases the important role that manufacturing has to play as we work to rebalance the economy and foster sustainable economic growth."

Places are limited, to register to attend on either 14th June or 26th September please visit http://semta.org.uk/events/best-practice-on-show or call Semta Customer Services on 0845 643 9001.
