Juergen Maier, CEO of Siemens UK and Ireland (pictured), has commented in response to the speech made at the Labour Party Conference by Ed Balls on Monday, 22 September 2014."The Shadow Chancellor is right to reassure business that eliminating the deficit is key - and the proposal to have this independently monitored should help improve transparency. Of course the best way to help tackle the deficit is to have strong growth - and to have that we need to boost our renewables and manufacturing sector.
"So it is encouraging to see that Ed Balls MP and Chuka Umunna MP recognise the need to build on the existing industrial strategy - making changes where they are needed and not simply for the sake of it. That is a positive step for stability, and will reassure SMEs in particular.
"The idea of a gold standard for vocational qualifications is an interesting proposition - but I stress that we must not introduce yet more short term initiatives to solve a long term skills shortage.
"And there still needs to be a relentless focus on building on the recovery by ensuring we have more long termism at the centre of business policy.
"I was encouraged to hear of plans to speed up decision making on major infrastructure investments our country needs, and look forward to seeing the practical steps to achieve that.
"For businesses, the devil is in the detail - and that is what we need some more of in the coming months."
