Consistent Environmental and Resource Efficiency Indicators Policy

Essential for European Innovation and Competitiveness

BRUSSELS, Belgium - 5 June 2013
- A Green Week side event on resource efficiency policy for the materials industry held in Brussels today, brought policymakers and industry together to exchange views on environmental and resource efficiency indicators in the European Union.

At the 'Environmental and resource efficiency productivity indicators - objectives, scope and challenges' debate, Carina Vopel, Head of Unit "Strategy" of the European Commission's DG Environment, set out the Commission's proposals for resource efficiency indicators. Speakers from the OECD, European Parliament, Eurometaux and the Nickel Institute took part in an extensive panel discussion.

Speaking at the event, Kevin Bradley, Nickel Institute President, said, "Resource efficiency is a global challenge. It is vital that European policymakers acknowledge that to overcome the economic crisis, the EU needs a strong industrial base for jobs, growth and innovation. Any proposed indicators and measures on resource efficiency should not hamper industrial activities. In the context of ongoing global competition, resource efficiency is already an economic reality for European industry."

"The Nickel Institute has long been active in the debate on European resource efficiency. Resource efficiency is part of the way the metals industry has and will continue to operate. In nickel using value chains, for instance, nickel-containing stainless steel, resource efficiency starts with nickel adding corrosion-resistance and durability during the use-phase. This is further enhanced at the end of life phase as nickel-containing stainless steel can be fully recycled". Dr Bradley added.

The debate was hosted by the Metals pro Climate initiative and the Nickel Institute with the partnership of Eurometaux.
