This is a uniquely interactive conference where participants will learn more about selecting the right treatment system, managing retrofits and ensuring compliance.The introduction of invasive marine species into new environments by ships' ballast water has been identified as one of the major threats to the world's oceans. Annually shipping moves over 80% of the world's freight whilst globally transferring up to 5 billion tonnes of ballast water. A similar volume may also be transferred domestically within countries and regions each year. Ballast water is essential to the safe and efficient operation of modern shipping, providing balance and stability to un-laden ships. However, it poses a serious ecological, economic and health threat. When the 2004 International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Ballast Water Convention comes into force, it is estimated that 68,000 vessels will require functional certified Ballast Water Treatment Systems by the year 2016.
"We are currently talking with a number of companies who manufacture treatment systems, and certification authorities who are formulating the testing criteria, to provide suitable sensor technologies to test for gross non-compliance and at the IMO D2 level," said Richard Burt, Chelsea's Marketing Director, "ensuring the discharged ballast water meets IMO standards is extremely important to remove the risk from the transfer of invasive species"
The new Chelsea FastBallast is a compact, robust sensor designed for installation into ballast water treatment systems, the ballast tank or as a hand held device, to provide a rapid, real-time monitor for compliance with the IMO D2 (10 to 50 µm category) standard. Through monitoring of variable fluorescence from viable phytoplankton cells FastBallast provides the combination of ultra-high sensitivity, and large dynamic range, enabling for detection at the equivalent of 0.01 mg m-3 chlorophyll-a under continuous flow or from static sample.
