Customer satisfaction is key to purchase of Open Date coders

SPL International, based in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, prides itself that it has never lost a customer in 20 years of trading. The privately owned sachet packing specialist recently moved to a new, 52,000sq ft warehouse and manufacturing facility and has taken delivery of two new Sprint Major hot foil coding machines from Open Date Equipment as part of its ambitious expansion plans.The company supplies sachets of ingredients for the Homebrew sector, much of which is exported. It has invested in a new sachet packing machine, to which the new coders are fitted, running at speeds up to 100 packs per minute. Sachet sizes range from 60 x 85mm to 180 x 130mm.
Chris Birnie, plant and facilities manager at SPL, explained the reasoning behind the new investment, "We are very proud of our reputation for customer satisfaction. To achieve this high standard we need to maintain our production levels and quality of output at all times. Our machinery selection is crucial to this success."
An established relationship with Open Date exists, with seven of its coders installed across the site. They are used to print a diverse range of sachets with Best Before and Batch Codes, as well as a full print plate for ingredients, logos and other information.
"Our experience with the equipment over the past decade was a major factor in our decision," continued Mr Birnie. "These machines give us the flexibility to handle complex printing requirements with minimal downtime for changeovers. We use Hot Foil coders for their indexing capabilities," he added.
Other important factors were the minimal maintenance costs for these coders and the fact that they fit easily to the SPL's sachet machines, with minimal modification and bracketry needed.
The Sprint Major offers a print area of 100 x 50mm and is the mid-range machine in the Sprint series. It weighs only 8.5Kg and can operate at 300 cycles per minute. These larger units can be used for simple graphics and text, or for spanning over more than one label or pack. Features include: a variety of print areas; left and right hand versions; stainless steel air motor; optional digital controller; variable temperature control; and compact size.
Also, says Open Date, the Sprint series of hot foil printers are comparatively small for their print capabilities, allowing simple installation on to any reel fed packaging or labelling machine in conjunction with either standard, or custom designed mounting frames.
