The compact box format IPC controls biogas energy recovery as well as visualizing and archiving the process data.Investigating the use of biogenic sources for energy generation, a German-Vietnamese consortium is experimenting with an integrated concept for waste water treatment, waste disposal and recovery of resources in the fish industry in South Vietnam. The pilot plant comprising a flotation unit, pumps, dosing system, reaction containers and gas recovery unit is accommodated in a 40 foot container and operates fully independently. A fanless Simatic IPC227D nanobox PC from Siemens with retentive memory and a Simatic WinAC software controller with real time capability provides open and closed-loop control of all components of the pilot plant for anaerobic gas generation from wastewater. The devices communicate with the controller via the Simatic ET 200S distributed I/O. Depending on the location and the demand, the recovered biogas can be used for local power generation, process heating or the operation of hydraulic systems. The distributed recovery of energy from waste water with simple anaerobic treatment is ideally suited for tropical regions with high prevailing temperatures: similar applications could include energy recovery from animal or vegetable waste and wastewater from the food and beverage industry or agriculture. The process promises to deliver high biogas yields while at the same time reducing the amount of primary sludge.
