Dynamic braking: Are you asking the right questions?

Leading power resistor manufacturer, Cressall, has released an infographic that outlines the most important questions to consider when selecting a dynamic breaking resistor (DBR). The aim of this guide is to support design engineers as they explore a move away from friction braking systems.DBRs provide a more reliable, faster braking system than friction brakes. They also provide design engineers with the choice to employ either rheostatic or regenerative breaking.
Rheostatic braking with a DBR dissipates the braking energy in the motor as heat in a resistor. However, regenerative braking feeds electric power back into the system so that less energy is wasted. This is particularly useful for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) designing machines, equipment or components for environmentally conscious clients.
"DBRs offer a range of benefits to OEMs, but one of the most interesting is regenerative braking," said Mark Templeman, sales engineer at Cressall. "Instead of simply burning off energy after braking, which is often common in elevators and factory equipment, DBRs can allow you to recoup the energy and cycle it back into the machine or building. This has great environmental benefits and saves money.
"We compiled this infographic with the intention of providing design engineers a check list of things to consider when they are looking to incorporate a DBR into a new product. While the benefits can be great, if mistakes are made during the selection process you can, at worst, create potentially dangerous situations."
