Commenting on yesterday's A Level results, Bhavina Bharkhada, Education and Skills Policy Adviser at EEF said:"Today's results show the numbers of young people taking STEM subjects, including Physics and Maths, is on the up. With more students achieving grades B and above in Maths and Physics, and more girls studying both subjects too, there are reasons to be positive.
It's great to see that many more students now have the potential to study engineering at university. But it's equally important for young people to know that university and clearing are not the only options. There are an array of other opportunities available to them including pathways such as apprenticeships.
With only 7% of young people going onto to do an apprenticeship after their A-levels, more needs to be done to highlight the fantastic opportunities in undertaking one. Apprenticeships are a great way to earn while you learn, acquire great experience in the engineering and manufacturing industries and, at the same time, even get a degree.
Both routes, higher education or apprenticeships, can lead to lucrative, exciting and fulfilling careers in engineering and manufacturing. So for any young person, now is the time to join a rapidly changing industry because manufacturers are looking for the next generation of creators, innovators and makers."
