Electric E-Air compressors boost productivity in Mexican silver and gold mines

Minera Saucito, one of Mexico’s most productive silver and gold mines, improved its productivity by adopting more efficient electric air compressors with lower operating costs. As part of its modernization efforts, the mine introduced two Atlas Copco XRVS 960E electric air compressors that now operate deep underground. These electric units provide powerful, stable high-pressure air with significantly reduced energy consumption, helping the site accelerate drilling, lower expenses, and create a more productive and reliable working environment.

Underground drilling relies on a steady supply of high-pressure air. Even a brief interruption can slow production down and affect the entire operation. Reliability is crucial in this type of industry, where consistent performance directly drives productivity. That need for dependable, high pressure air is why the mine introduced electric portable compressors from Atlas Copco designed to deliver stable power in demanding underground conditions.

These compressors provide the constant 25 bar air flow required for fast penetration rates and help the site maintain its rigorous drilling schedule. Minera Saucito operators report that the units offer strong energy efficiency and reliable output, allowing each shift to run more smoothly with fewer delays and more consistent drilling performance.

Why electric compressors fit the needs of underground mining
The choice of the electric XRVS 960E air compressors was driven by a combination of performance, sustainability, and practicality. The electric drive eliminates diesel emissions, which is crucial inside confined mining environments where ventilation is limited and air quality must remain safe. The reduced noise level further improves working comfort underground, making communication and coordination easier for operators.

The unit’s robust and portable design also plays a role. even in challenging underground layouts, the compressors can be moved wherever drilling is required, allowing teams to reposition equipment easily as the mine advances.

Supporting a long-term production improvement strategy
Minera Saucito went through a broad modernization effort in the past year. A key focus of the project was proving how equipment efficiency directly influences production levels and operational profitability. By integrating electric portable compressors, the mine benefits from lower energy costs, reduced maintenance requirements, and improved reliability compared to traditional diesel-driven units.

These advantages support a more efficient drilling process, helping the mine achieve higher productivity with fewer operational interruptions.
Minera Saucito tested different machines for their drilling activities, but none have delivered the level of performance of Atlas Copco’s XRVS 960E air compressor. Overheating-related failures are significantly lower as the cooling system operates at 110°C and consistently maintains that temperature, allowing the mine to continue moving forward without delays. The electric air compressor has proven to have an effective design for underground mining operations. In addition, it is backed by readily available spare parts and service support.
