Emerson’s New Flow Measurement Solution Improves Data Centre Reliability, Efficiency and Uptime

Rosemount 8795 applies decades of critical infrastructure insights to data centre cooling systems

Global automation leader Emerson today announced the new Rosemount™ 8795 Magnetic Flow Sensor, purpose-built for data centre hydronic cooling applications. This industrial-grade flow sensor provides accurate, repeatable flow measurements for high reliability and uptime in mission-critical data centre applications. Designed for data centre environments, the flow sensor addresses common specification needs to simplify selection, installation and commissioning.

“As data centres expand to support growing digital infrastructure demands, the Rosemount 8795 applies decades of Emerson flow measurement expertise to help operators improve reliability, simplify deployment and maximise cooling system performance in mission-critical applications,” said Bob Halgren, vice president magnetic and vortex flow products with Emerson’s measurement instrumentation business.

The flow sensor can host Emerson’s proprietary software designed for short-run installations, enabling accurate flow measurement even when straight pipe requirements cannot be met, as is often the case in space-constrained data centre environments. This feature provides 0.5% accuracy at zero diameters (0D) of pipe runs based on the upstream disturbance and distance from the electrodes, and it is implemented during set-up when the sensor is paired with compatible Rosemount magnetic flow transmitters. This is an industry first as other mag meters require either a specially designed sensor with multiple electrodes or a reduced bore to provide this benefit.

For installations with longer upstream and downstream straight pipe runs of 5U/2D or more, the flow sensor can be paired with any compatible Rosemount transmitter to provide flow measurement with 0.2% ± 2 mm/s accuracy for reliable monitoring and control of critical cooling loops. With all compatible Rosemount transmitters, the built-in diagnostics and verification capabilities empower data centre operators and integrators to reduce commissioning risk, while maintaining confidence in ongoing system performance.

Optimised for chilled water and water glycol cooling loops, the sensor provides consistent performance across common data centre line sizes of 2 - 18 inches. Proven reliability and 0.1% repeatability ensures highly reliable and accurate data sent to building management systems (BMS) and data centre infrastructure management (DCIM) for water, cooling and power usage effectiveness (WUE, CUE, PUE) calculations. Its polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) liner and stainless steel electrodes were selected specifically for these types of thermal management applications in primary cooling loops, ensuring dependable operation in closed-loop cooling systems.

The industrial-grade flow sensor is designed to meet common BMS cooling specifications, while also being flexible for various situational needs. Functionality includes no moving parts, 5µS/cm minimum conductivity, dual 4-20mA plus Modbus output, universal power for AC or DC usage, flexibility for integrally or remotely mounted transmitters, and Short Run Installation software. These functions enable standardisation around a single solution for all hydronic needs at a data centre site. Emerson’s global supply chain shortens lead times at the scale required by data centres.

The Rosemount 8795 brings enhanced software capabilities and simplified ordering to Emerson’s existing magnetic flow meter portfolio, strengthening Emerson’s instrumentation offering for data centre customers.
