ENERGY INDUSTRY RISES TO THE CHALLENGE AND RAISES £236 000 FOR CHARITY

Over 200 participants making up 38 teams from companies including Centrica, Hess and Tullow Oil joined BG Group from 7 - 9 July. The largest networking and fundraising event of its kind for the energy industry, this year raised a staggering £236 000 for CARE International, the overseas aid agency and Sparks, the children's medical research charity.The six stage event was a combination of running, cycling, canoeing, orienteering and construction challenges putting teams' physical fitness and strategic skills to the test whilst providing inter-company team bonding and industry networking opportunities. Crossing the spectacular Rhossili Down coastline, Team Amec from Aberdeen, Scotland were crowned overall winners of the BG Energy Challenge 2011 - UK having demonstrated outstanding team work, determination and strong strategic planning throughout.
Paul Slater, Amec Team Captain said: "Participating in the event has given us a great opportunity for our team to come together and get to know one another outside the office environment. I'm extremely proud of the whole team and the immense hard work that has been put in over the past four months; training week in, week out and more importantly the funds we've raised for charity."
Teams were committed to raising a minimum £5 000 each. Advocating this great work at the event was Jason Leonard, OBE, this year's Ambassador and 2011 Sparks President. Competing as Leader of the charity team, the 2003 England Rugby World Cup hero and most capped England player said:
"I am delighted to be part of the BG Energy Challenge and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The sense of achievement for each team is fantastic and to be part of that is very special. The help and support for charities such as Sparks is the real reward though; all the money raised really does make a difference."
