Flash point management brings savings galore

Global Heat Transfer has expanded its range of Light Ends Removal Kits (LERKs) to help companies using thermal fluid systems ensure more cost-effective, clean and safe operations. Global Heat Transfer's new active feed LERK is even easier to install and manage than its gravity fed counterpart, because it requires no additional elevation and can be placed at floor level.

A recurring maintenance challenge of heat transfer fluids comes in the form of light ends - the lower-boiling, volatile thermal oil components generated at high operating temperatures. Light ends reduce the ignition or flash point of thermal fluid. Left unmanaged, light ends create fire hazards and lead to operational problems such as cavitation in thermal oil pumps.

"Every company that uses heat transfer fluid systems has to obey very strict DSEAR and ATEX Health and Safety Regulations," explains Clive Jones, managing director of Global Heat Transfer. "The only way to ensure system and workforce safety is through continuous maintenance and proactive management of thermal fluid. By using a light ends removal kit as part of a proactive management plan, such as Thermocare, a company can also save up to 75% on maintenance costs as the result of extending the life of the thermal fluid and ensure production consistency by avoiding expensive downtime."

Global Heat Transfer provides tailored light ends removal kits, designed in accordance to system size, specifications and oil type. To cater for different system layouts, the thermal fluid specialist supplies, installs and managers both passive LERKs that use gravity to return the oil to the circuit and a new range of active LERKs that employ a frequency-controlled pump. A light end removal kit can be fitted to new or existing heat transfer systems.

The distiller unit on the light ends removal kits come in different sizes for systems with a thermal oil volume of anywhere between 2,000 litres and 100,000 litres. The condensators can be air-cooled or water-cooled for systems operating in particularly hot environments.

To better monitor and manage the operations, the electrical control system can be stand-alone or integrated into the Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) of the thermal oil system, making it more user-friendly and respondent.

The active-fed skid mounted LERK is also available for hire, for companies that want to test its abilities before employing it on a longer-term basis.
