Flow measurement for the accurate metering of milk and milk products

Milk is both a staple food worldwide and a key ingredient in many non-food products such as cosmetics. Right from the collection of the milk from the dairy, right through to the formulation and processing of the final product, measurement is a vitally important function. Accurate measurement is important for sales volume calculation, inventory control and precise process control to ensure product quality and repeatability.

But milk products come in many different forms with different densities, viscosities and flow characteristics that can make accurate measurement difficult. However, by using electromagnetic flow meters to do the measuring, many of the difficulties can be overcome.

Electromagnetic flow meters can be used to provide accurate flow measurement for a wide range of products from collection through to final processing. Products may include:

-€¢ Whole milk and raw milk
-€¢ Standardised milk of 0.3% - 3.8% fat
-€¢ Ewe's and goat's milk
-€¢ Soy milk
-€¢ Extended Shelf Life (ESL) milk
-€¢ Condensed milk and coffee cream
-€¢ Cream
-€¢ Yoghurt and kefir
-€¢ Buttermilk and soured milk
-€¢ Whey

The same metering devices may be used to measure accurately the quality of milk collected by the road tanker in accordance with weights and measurement regulations; during processing to accurately measure and control flow rates and additive dosing levels (for example fruit); and control the filling process at the end of the production chain. Electromagnetic flow meters do not have any moving parts and are suitable for use at high temperatures or under vacuum conditions.

The IZMAG™ flow meter from GEA Diessel is an example of the ultimate in modern electromagnetic flow meter technology. The IZMAG™ also includes, for example, Bluetooth technology for remote data collection, automatic calibration, and is suitable for aseptic processing.

GEA Diessel is a technology leader in flow metering and control. In addition to the new IZMAG™ flow meters, the company also excels in engineering to help customers meet modern production requirements especially those involving carbonated liquids or other products that can be difficult to meter accurately.
