Stafford-based precision gearing expert Harmonic Drive UK's customer care specialist, Gail Softley, has raised over £1,800 for Macmillan Cancer Support during this year's Isle of Wight Ultra Challenge, organised by Action Challenge. The event, which took place across two days from Saturday April 30, saw competitors walk 106km non-stop around the island.Gail (pictured), who has been part of the Harmonic Drive UK team for 8 years, walked the circumference of the Isle of Wight in just over 35 hours, raising over £1,800 for her nominated charity. Gail was part of a team of six that collectively raised £8,500.
The Isle of Wight challenge aims to raise money for a number of charities that are partnered with the event, including the Teenage Cancer Trust and Dreamflight children's charity. It forms part of the company's Ultra Challenge series, which itself is partnered with charities such as Macmillan Cancer Support, Help for Heroes and the Alzheimer's Society.
"Each charity partnered with the event provides exceptional care and support to thousands of disadvantaged people across the country, whether they're living with cancer, dementia or even abuse," Gail explained. "These issues are all around us, whether it's in social circles or local communities -۠everybody will know somebody who has been affected in one way or another.
"This was my first time doing the challenge and it was harder than I, or my team, had expected. We had been going on 20-25 mile training walks in preparation for the event, but the event itself was far more demanding both physically and emotionally. The six of us relied on one another to stay motivated and to continue walking. There were over 900 individuals that set out to take on the full island challenge, and we were one of only about 500 that reached the finish line. It was amazing to be part of something on this scale, and I'm happy I was able to help raise much needed funds for such a great cause."
