Ten of Atlas Copco's new QAC 1250 transportable 1 MW generators, which set new standards for maximum output and minimum size, have been ordered by Generator Power, the UK's leading generator hire company."The compact standard dimensions of the QAC 1250 generators make them easy and convenient to transport," said Mark Biddell, Area Sales Manager for Atlas Copco Construction & Mining, "which means they can be placed in locations that would be completely inaccessible for other, bulkier 1 MW generators. In addition, they're quiet running and they deliver superb fuel economy, so it's easy to see why they are in such big demand."
Atlas Copco's new QAC 1250 generators are rated at 1,250 kVA allowing them to deliver a full 1 MW of useful stable power to loads of all types. QAC 1250 generators are housed in a standard 20-foot ISO CSC container, unlike other similarly rated generators, which means that they can be transported easily and legally as container cargo, and despite their compact construction, they incorporate large access doors that allow easy maintenance, ensuring that up time is maximised.
These versatile generators incorporate an intelligent cooling system with electrically driven variable speed cooling fans, which reduces fuel consumption by up to 10% at full load, equivalent to 550 litres of fuel per day, or 200,000 litres in a full year of operation. The high efficiency of the cooling system also means that the generator can deliver full power in ambient temperatures as high as 40ºC at an altitude of 1000m above sea level, while a built-in engine coolant heater ensures reliable starting at temperatures as low as -€‘25ºC.
This wide operating temperature range makes the QAC 1250 ideal for use in even the most demanding of environments, which was another important advantage for Generator Power, as the company is called upon to supply hire equipment for use in a wide range of conditions and locations.
As standard, the QAC1250 is equipped with a Qc4002 synchronising control panel. It can run alone or in parallel with similar or different generators in island mode, PMS (power management system) mode, or in parallel with the mains in peak shaving, fixed power and AMF (automatic mains failure) modes.
The three-phase, auto-excited and auto-regulated, brushless Leroy Somer synchronous alternator used in the QAC1250 is equipped with a permanent magnet generator to provide an auxiliary exciting supply. This guarantees powerful, fast voltage build up, which gives enhanced short circuit capability and better electrical motor starting. The alternator is also equipped as standard with an anti-condensation heater to help maximise its lifespan.
In the QAC1250, the alternator is partnered with a Cummins KTA 50 engine that combines very high performance levels with extremely compact dimensions and excellent power takeover characteristics - 100% load step capability, 65% with G2 limits. In addition, the proven KTA 50 engine provides the outstanding reliability that users have come to expect from Atlas Copco products.
