High Flyer's journey can inspire young people

ONE of the UK's foremost engineers is hoping to inspire youngsters to follow in his footsteps.John Roberts, chief engineer for the Airbus A380 Aircraft, responsible for the wing, landing gear and fuel systems, will be at the Farnborough Air Show's Futures Day to share his experiences.
Students aged between 10 and 21 are being invited to submit a written application as to why they should be the ones to take part, with those judged to be the best getting the chance to meet and interview him.
The opportunity has been created by the Leaders Award for STEM, an annual award for students between the ages of 5 and 23 who are curious and engage with science, technology, engineering and Maths. The deadline for applications is June 1.
John, who was noted for his appearance last year on the BBC's How to Build a Super Jumbo said: "There are fantastic opportunities available in the high technology world of engineering today. Although there are many misconceptions on the role of a professional engineer, the reality is that modern engineering is incredibly advanced and high tech - prizing innovation, imagination and creativity.
"Every industry and every area of society depends on the practical skills of engineers to provide technological solutions to the problems, issues and ideas that affect every area of our lives. Technological advances would never happen without engineers and so the people who work in this industry are extremely important in developing the future of our society. I hope many young people will be inspired by what they see at the Show and enter into this exciting and rewarding career."
Also supporting the event is Semta, the sector skills council for science, engineering and manufacturing technologies.
Semta's UK Operations Director Lynn Tomkins said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to hear first hand from someone who has spent their lifetime in engineering as to how exciting a career it is.
"We need more young people to become apprentices and graduates to help the UK back on the path of economic growth. Hopefully John can inspire some of those who win the chance to interview him to give serious thought to a career in engineering or advanced manufacturing."
The winners will get to meet John at one of two sessions on July 13. Completed interviews will be entered into the Royal Aeronautical Society Special Leaders Award.
