Hyperion Systems Engineering Ltd. the leading independent solutions provider to the global process announced the successful delivery of a high fidelity Operator Training Simulator (OTS) system for the new Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) for Motor Oil Hellas (MOH), located at Corinth Refineries in Greece. The model of the CDU includes models of the crude preheating train, crude furnace, atmospheric crude distillation column, strippers, distillation overhead compressor, debutanizer and C3/C4 Splitter. The high fidelity dynamic OTS was developed with an emulated Honeywell DCS.
The Distributed Control Systems (DCS) and the Emergency Shut-Down (ESD) configuration were developed in the DynsimTM environment and integrated with the emulated DCS graphics. Complex DCS control logic and sequences have been extensively and accurately modeled to emulate the actual Honeywell DCS. Complex control model includes sequence and control of crude furnace feed pass balance.
In addition, the Motor Oil Hellas' CDU OTS included a Field Operator Station and an Instructor Station. Apart from the normal functionalities of the aforementioned stations, the operators could access an instructor variable page and a custom malfunction page to modify feed and ambient conditions as well as trigger 15 predefined custom malfunctions. Custom malfunctions included sludge effect in desalter on increased desalter amperage.
Mr. Costas Moros, DCS Section Head at MOH Corinth Refineries said "The OTS for our new Crude Distillation Unit is a key element of our refinery's operational strategy. Over the period of project execution and given the tight deadlines associated with the new unit coming on stream, we developed an excellent working relationship with the Hyperion project team who put all the necessary efforts to overcome any difficulties and deliver to Motor Oil Hellas a world-class training simulator".
The finished product consisted of a high fidelity model of the Crude Distillation Unit fronted by a close replica of the Honeywell DCS including Dual screen functionality, emulated Honeywell DCS keyboards, as well as alarm management and trending functionalities.
