IChemE joins calls for Government focus on chartership

More than 40 chartered and professional organisations call on the Government to champion chartership and professional registration ~
The Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) has joined a coalition of more than 40 chartered and professional organisations, representing over 1.5 million members between them, in calling for stronger support of chartership, professional registrations and accreditations from the UK Government. In an open letter to Pat McFadden MP, the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, they argue that this is an essential step in rebuilding public trust and driving economic growth.
The coalition argues that Chartered institutions are uniquely placed to support the industrial activity that will fuel growth. They do this by raising professional standards, improving access to professional careers, promoting and strengthening ethical practice and rebuilding public trust in professional businesses from across science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) sectors.
Chartership also represents a badge of honour for those who achieve it, signifying professional excellence and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards in their field.
One of IChemE’s members, Ahsan Zafar, commented, “Being chartered is recognition that I operate at a level where engineering decisions carry real consequence. As a Process Engineering Manager, I lead a team of chemical engineers of varying experience, and I’ve balanced leadership responsibility, commercial pressures, and continuous professional development while delivering major projects. Chartership formalises that journey.
“It also represents resilience. The work I do influences safety, cost, programme delivery, and long-term project performance. Being chartered signifies that I’m trusted to make those decisions competently, ethically, and with sound engineering judgement,” concluded Zafar.
