Industry Recognition - A Winner's Perspective

For the past 19 years, the Pump Industry Awards has led the way in recognising and rewarding excellence throughout the pump sector. It has celebrated innovations, applications, skills development, engineering acumen and overall business achievement - all of which have contributed to making the pump industry the success that it is today.Supported throughout that time by the BPMA, along with various partners and sponsors, the awards presentation dinner has established itself as a highly regarded industry event, attended by many of the leading figures in the sector.
So, as we embark on the 20th Annual Pump Industry Awards programme, we have delved into the archives and revisited some of our past Winners. Looking back, can often re-affirm exactly how far one has travelled, and this awards programme can lay claim to an impressive journey.
In this article, we hear from John Hollins of SPP Pumps, who was the proud recipient of an award back in 2007.
The pump industry awards have had a big impact on my career to date. In 2007 I won 'Young Pump Engineer of the Year. On the way to the awards I clearly remember Steve Wright on the radio announcing the Pump Industry Awards and wishing the pump industry all the best! At the same awards SPP also won Product of the Year with its LLC range of split case water pumps. (LLC Pump 2)
Since 2007 a lot has changed for me, SPP and of course the wider pump industry. For me personally I have held various roles at SPP including SPP's Product Development Manager, Chief Engineer and currently I'm responsible for SPP's pre-engineered product ranges. Some career highlights are working on the largest Fire Pump ever approved by UL and the Fire Pumps that protect the tallest building in the UK, The Shard. (Shard Pump 1)
Outside of SPP I have the honour of representing the pump industry as Chairman for the BSI Pump Committee (MCE/6) and the BPMA Technical Committee.
The LLC pump range has also continued to move forward with many pumps working across the world for industrial and municipal worker customers. Another SPP product, the Q-series Dewatering Pump won Product of the Year in 2003, and that too continues to be successful. A developed version of the original is being sold in volume to hire companies around the world including significant sales to Australia. (Q-series)
As well as my involvement in SPP's product development, I'm proud of the fact that SPP's Graduate Training Program has produced several finalists in the 'Engineer of the Year' category since 2007. SPP have also been honoured to receive the 'Manufacturer of the Year' accolade. This award is my favourite as it recognises the work of the entire business.
In response, BPMA Director & CEO, Steve Schofield commented, "I am delighted to have seen John's career develop so well over the years, and indeed benefit from his accrued knowledge at the BPMA Technical Committee Meetings. I am also so please that the Awards are so valued by our industry. The 'Call for Nominations' for the 2020 Pump Industry Awards are now open, with the 'Online Entry' Forms being available for completion until 5.00pm on Monday 6th January.
Entries are sought for any company, product, application, service or individual within the pump industry that is worthy of recognition and reward. Nominations are not restricted to BPMA members, and you can put forward as many entries as you like. Multiple entries in any given category are also permitted.
