Institution suggests recommendations ahead of Autumn Statement

Dr Colin Brown, Director of Engineering at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, said ahead of Wednesday's Autumn Statement:"This week's Autumn Statement is a chance for Government to outline how it will use ideas like the circular economy to help generate the home-grown skills needed for its industrial strategy. This is why Theresa May's comments today to back businesses with £2bn for scientific research and development is welcome.
"The circular economy can provide a foundation for economic development, regeneration of industrial heartlands and job security as well as creating collaborative communities and reducing our impact on air, land and water.
"Furthermore, the Institution believes that the long awaited careers strategy in England must include hard incentives and ring-fenced funding for schools that will present young people, especially from marginalised communities, with opportunities for upward social mobility. Industry can play a part in supporting careers in schools but Government must take a leading role by supporting and scrutinising high-quality personalised careers information advice and guidance."
