NEWBURY, Berkshire - November, 2012 - Engineers and scientists wanting to learn how to acquire reliable and accurate measurements as part of monitoring, test or control systems can register for the National Instruments UK & Ireland 7-part Sensor Measurements Fundamentals Webcast Series.Sensors are at the foundation of every measurement system, but the way they work and the strategies for making the most of them vary by type and application. The first webcast in the series will cover the essentials of data acquisition and lay the groundwork for subsequent sessions, which focus on specific sensor applications such as temperature, velocity or strain measurements. During each webcast, NI UK & Ireland engineers will present measurement fundamentals, from theory to practice and participants will have the opportunity to directly interact with presenters and fellow attendees.

Tuesday 11th December 10am Data Acquisition Basics and Technology
Introducing the fundamental concepts and the terminology associated with data acquisition. Sensor measurements are complex, requiring integration of multiple physical quantities, high accuracy accounting for real world irregularities and deviations. This webcast covers essential sensor operating principles including range, resolution and sample rate, which are critical to ensure accurate representation of the physical phenomenon being measured.
Tuesday 11th December 2pm Temperature Measurements
This session provides a detailed guide for measurement and device considerations taking temperature measurements using thermocouples, RTDs or thermistors. Participants will learn common temperature applications, sensor basics and how to connect sensors to instruments.
Wednesday 12th December 10am Voltage, Current and Power Measurements
Learn the fundamentals of creating AC/DC voltage, current and power quality/monitoring measurement systems. See how to properly connect the signals to data acquisition systems for accurate acquisition and how to gain power measurements quickly.
Wednesday 12th December 2pm Load, pressure and Torque Measurements
See how wheatstone bridges form the foundation of pressure, load and torque measurements. Also learn concepts such as signal conditioning for load measurements and connecting a sensor to the instrument.
Thursday 13th December 10am Strain Measurements
This session explains the concepts and techniques of measuring strain with strain gauges, including an overview of this sensor technology, together with signal conditioning and NI data acquisition systems for strain gauge measurements.
Thursday 13th December 2pm Vibration Measurements
Sound and vibration analysis plays a major role in many different applications areas including audio, noise, vibration and harshness (NVH), machine monitoring, structural dynamics and sound quality. This webcast will focus on the operating principles for building a sound and vibration measurement system.
Friday 14th December 10am Frequency Encoder
How accurate are frequency measurements? This webcast describes methods for making frequency and encoder measurements and explains how to determine measurement accuracy. Learn how to connect an encoder to a system, find sources of errors and how to easily acquire encoder signals.
