Lens manufacturer has its eyes trained on future success

A lens manufacturer has its eyes firmly trained on future success after receiving support and funding to train staff and improve its processes.Essilor, the leading manufacturer and wholesale distributor of optical lenses in the UK, based in Thornbury near Bristol, has undertaken an intensive course of training and business improvement after receiving £36,000 funding from the Skills Funding Agency. The company was supported in its bid by EEF, the manufacturers' organisation, which worked with the firm to identify where it would see the biggest efficiency improvements and then helped it to successfully secure the funding.
As a result, the company has just celebrated completing an 18-month training and systems overhaul that has enabled it to cut costs, improve innovation and boost staff morale.
The project was managed by Lean Education and Development and Essilor estimates that the new practices it has implemented as part of the overhaul are projected to save it over £4,000 per year. As part of this, staff were trained in a cutting edge manufacturing technique called Lean, which is used by most leading global manufacturers today.
