LORIEN HELPS TO COMPLETE MAJOR WASTE PROCESSING FACILITY

Lorien Engineering Solutions has completed work on an anaerobic digestion facility capable of processing 48,000 tonnes of waste food per year.The plant, constructed for Shanks Waste Management, is located on the Westcott Venture Park in Buckinghamshire, a 650-acre mixed-use development comprising office space, warehouses, manufacturing buildings and workshops.
Burton based Lorien, specialists in engineering design and project management, were drafted in to support the Shanks Waste delivery team and provide expertise during the build for the Mechanical, Process and Electrical Engineering elements of the project.
Lorien quickly became the project lead on those elements all the way through to onsite commissioning, working closely with the Shanks team on everything from approval of Plant and Instrument Control Specifications to Procurement.
Lorien director Steve Turner commented: "We were pleased to be a vital part of the Shanks team throughout the project, in addition to more recently assisting with an RHI application for the plant."
The AD facility is capable of exporting 3.2mw of renewable electricity and illustrates the Shanks philosophy of making more from waste.
The process begins with food waste being separated from any packaging, before taken to a digester while packaging is sent off to be treated separately. Under the anaerobic conditions the food waste is broken down by micro-organisms, which generates biogas and digestate. The digestate is then conditioned before being used to fertilise land. Biogas is cleaned and burned to produce renewable electricity, reducing the use of fossil fuels and minimising greenhouse gas emissions.
Head of Process Design and Engineering at Shanks Waste Management, Ray Nattrass said: "We chose Lorien because of the high calibre and flexibility of the individual engineers they proposed for this demanding project. In addition we also had access to their office based staff when additional support was required. They were an integral part of the delivery team and key to ensuring the facility met our technical standards."
