MANUFACTURERS ADVISED TO WIDEN THEIR PORTFOLIOS TO MINIMISE RISK

One hundred and fifty delegates from across Yorkshire and the wider region attended a hugely successful conference entitled: 'A Balanced Portfolio: Future Opportunities and Challenges across the Advanced Engineering and Materials Sector', which was held at Castle Park in Doncaster recently.The event, which was organised by NAMTEC (National Metals Technology Centre) on behalf of AEM Yorkshire, featured a world class line-up of speakers, each of whom highlighted potential opportunities to join the supply chain in their specialist sectors. These sectors included nuclear, carbon capture and storage, aerospace, defence, renewable energy, oil and gas.
Dr Alan Partridge, Chief Executive of NAMTEC (The National Metals Technology Centre) opened the conference with his presentation outlining the need for companies to diversify and seek new markets in order to protect against any future setbacks in particular sectors.
Dr Partridge said: "In today's global marketplace, where unpredictable events or accidents can have a significant impact on a whole sector, it is absolutely vital for businesses to reduce the risks by joining several separate supply chains. This conference has been designed to give UK manufacturing companies the support they need to investigate new markets and widen their customer base."
The speakers were from leading UK and international companies and organisations including The Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (NAMRC), Rolls-Royce, Doosan Babcock, Scottish and Southern Energy, Subsea UK, RenewableUK, Pelamis Wave Power and Alstom.
Delegates had the chance to meet key players in a range of industries and network with potential supply chain partners. Exhibition space at the conference was fully booked as a range of businesses and institutions also took the opportunity to exhibit at the conference including NetComposites, DavyMarkham, Nabarro, Firth Rixon, RWE, the British Manufacturing Plant Constructors Association (BMPCA) and the University of Sheffield.
Bob Ruddlestone, Director of BMPCA and one of the exhibitors, said: "This conference offered a cost effective route to improve our association's visibility with companies in the specialist plant and engineering sectors. NAMTEC's events provide forums for manufacturing companies to keep up to date with the opportunities available and those which are being developed in renewable energy production, nuclear power and other areas."
