Matmatch partners with SCHOTT AG

SCHOTT's NEXTREMA® line added to Matmatch's materials database

Online materials search engine Matmatch has partnered with SCHOTT to promote its NEXTREMA® glass-ceramic material platform made for extreme conditions. The company is now encouraging design engineers and product designers to find novel and experimental uses for the versatile new material range.

Glass-ceramics are becoming increasingly popular due to their versatility. SCHOTT's NEXTREMA® line showcases this versatility, for example with thermal shock resistance of up to 850 degrees Celsius, near-zero thermal expansion and an operating temperature of up to 950 degrees Celsius.

These properties make NEXTREMA® ideal for a variety of industries and applications, from being used in industrial furnaces and infrared heaters to carrier plates in the semiconductor industry. The addition of the ceramic glass line to Matmatch's platform allows design engineers around the world to find innovative uses for the material, with the company believing the range of shapes and appearances available presents an opportunity for novel designs.

NEXTREMA®'s versatility has allowed it to find a way into different applications across many industries. Its earliest use was in infrared heaters to increase efficiency. NEXTREMA® has also been used in the production of active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) technologies, which are present in tablets and smartphones.

The material's natural coloration also reduces the complexity of value chains for innovative design concepts, with the glass-ceramic now being used in panels of high-quality electrical and household appliances.

"Our NEXTREMA® material platform allows designers and engineers to be creative with their product designs," explained Vanessa Pehnelt, of SCHOTT. "A favourite example of ours is it's use as transparent cover for grills. Not only does this allow users to keep a close eye on their cooking, they also don't have to worry about the glass cracking due to thermal shock. Additionally, NEXTREMA® has almost no thermal expansion when heated up.
