METTLER TOLEDO as Single Source for Weighing Equipment for Paint Manufacturing

A streamlined weighing process has reduced costs, errors and training needs for one paint manufacturer.

Dunn-Edwards' new production facility in Phoenix, Arizona manufactures paint in fully automated processes from raw material to finished product. This means the production lines are almost entirely 'hands off'. The core of the process is precise, automatic dosing and batching. So an accurate weighing system was key to the company's requirements.

After consideration, METTLER TOLEDO was selected to equip the automated paint manufacturing facility with streamlined weighing technology. The company won the tender because it could provide a complete weighing solution with a minimum number of components.

One of the key components is the versatile IND780 weighing terminal which is used as sole local controller and data transmitter for all weighing applications. The units are used as dosing and batching controllers on the tank and floor scales; processing accurate weight data and communicating with the PLC via the Modbus TCP/IP Fieldbus system.

The IND780 is also used on the truck scale for weighing bulk materials as they enter the plant and finished product leaving the plant. The bulk materials are pumped out of the truck into large holding tanks. From there the materials are eventually mixed in small and large processing tanks supported by METTLER TOLEDO Flexmount® and Pinmount® weigh modules. In addition, some materials are weighed and mixed in IBC containers mounted on VLC floor scales.

The single source solution developed by METTLER TOLEDO complies with the requirements for the automatic process and ensures high quality paint products while reducing costs from inaccurate mixing. The customer has a streamlined weighing operation with a small variety of components; reducing training efforts for operators and maintenance personnel.
